Predecessor Technologies
- XML-Data The first contender, XML-Data was submitted to the W3C before XML was even a recommendation. XML-Data used XML syntax to describe XML documents, and included data typing and lot of database-specific features that were never implemented. A reduced set of XML-Data is part of the Internet Explorer 5.0 XML parser.
- DCD DCD, a joint creation of Microsoft and IBM, recast much of XML-Data into a simpler form, using RDF as its inspiration.
- SOX 'Schema for Object-oriented XML' uses techniques from object-oriented programming, notably inheritance, to define XML document structures. (SOX is, in some ways, the 'winner' - it's a good place to start for understanding the current draft.)
- XSchema/DDML Built on the xml-dev mailing list (and edited by the presenter), XSchema was an attempt to build a simple schema language that used XML syntax to describe XML document structures.
