Yikes! DTDs, XDR, XSDL, RELAX - where's it going to end? There are an enormous number of possibilities.
Already have legacies to deal with In addition to all the XML-based schema varieties, there are database structures, Java class structures, flat-file text documents, and lots of other things out there.
One possible solution Some kind of automated any-to-any model seems necessary. In addition to being a schema editor, Extensibility's XML Authority (demo) provides pathways between many of these descriptions. (Not the 'competitors', though.)
